Artist Statement

Hair plays a significant role in many cultures. It can express an ethnic identity, personality trait, spiritual belief, or just a symbol of oneself. For me, hair exudes a breathtaking charm that tells stories of cultural history and personal beauty.

My oil paintings celebrate the allure of African and African American hairstyles. These portraits of hair represent the versatility and uniqueness in black culture while acting as a mirror, creating personal connections between itself and my audience. With each hairstyle, I continuously build up layers of texture and color to emphasize the distinctive features within the portrait. Braids, twists, locs, and fluffy updos are just a few examples of styles that show off those textures.

My paintings are meant to inspire others and to help them confront their own insecurities about their hair. As I further into my career as an artist, I will carry on the practice of creating works that convey the message of self-love and embracing culture.
